Terms of Service

In plain words

  • Pet Legacy Guide is a free, informational site. There are no accounts, and nothing here is veterinary advice.
  • You keep ownership of any memorial you submit and give us permission to display it. Only submit what you have the right to share.
  • Visitor submissions are reviewed by a person before they are published, and we may decline or remove content. Editors also add example memorials for fictional pets.
  • The directory is informational and never an endorsement. Always confirm details with a provider yourself.

Acceptance of these terms

By visiting Pet Legacy Guide or submitting a memorial, you agree to these Terms of Service and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.

We may update these terms from time to time. The “last updated” date at the top of this page always reflects the current version. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Who may use the site

The site is meant for adults, and for young people using it with a parent or guardian. You must be old enough to form a binding agreement where you live, or have a parent or guardian's permission, to submit a memorial or use a form. You are responsible for what you submit.

What Pet Legacy Guide is

Pet Legacy Guide is a free, informational resource for pet loss and end-of-life planning. We offer:

  • A directory of pet end-of-life services (cemeteries, crematoriums, mobile euthanasia veterinarians, preservation specialists, and living memorials)
  • Educational guides about the decisions, the process, and the grief that comes with losing a companion animal
  • A Wall of Remembrance where anyone can create a free memorial page for a pet

No accounts, ever

Pet Legacy Guide does not use user accounts, logins, or passwords, and we have no plans to add them. Memorial submissions, corrections and removal requests are handled through the forms and contact address on this site, not through a personal account. Because there are no accounts, we may need to ask for information that only the original submitter would know before we change or remove a memorial.

The service directory is informational only

Directory listings are gathered from public sources and organised to help you find services in your area. Descriptions and translations are drafted with AI assistance. We do our best to keep listings accurate, but we do not independently verify every business's licensing, pricing, opening hours, availability, or quality of service. A listing is not an endorsement, a recommendation, or a guarantee, and listings are never paid for.

Always contact a business directly and confirm details before making a decision, especially during a difficult and time-sensitive moment. If you own a listed business and want it corrected or removed, contact us.

Guides, translations and AI assistance

Our guides are general information, prepared with AI assistance and not reviewed by veterinarians. Parts of the site, including directory descriptions and translations of the guides, are produced or translated with the help of AI and may contain errors or awkward wording. The English text is the reference version; if a translation and the English text differ, the English text prevails.

Submitting a memorial

When you submit a memorial (a pet's name, story, and a photo), you confirm that the photo and story are yours to share, or that you have permission to share them, and that they do not infringe anyone's rights or include other people's personal information without their consent. You grant Pet Legacy Guide a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to display, reproduce, and distribute that content on the site and in connection with the site (including previews when a page is shared or indexed) for as long as the memorial remains published. You retain ownership of what you submit.

Memorials are for animals that have died. They aren't a place to promote a business, to memorialise a person, or to criticise anyone.

Review and publication

Every photo that is submitted is automatically screened for prohibited content and malware, and every submission from a visitor is reviewed by a person before it is published. Nothing a visitor submits goes live automatically.

We may decline to publish, or later remove, any submission for any reason, including the prohibited content described below, and we have no obligation to tell you the reason or to notify you, since we don't collect contact details with a memorial. Review times are an estimate, not a promise. Duplicate submissions for the same pet may be removed.

Example memorials

From time to time, our editors add example memorials for fictional pets, written and illustrated with the help of AI, so that the Wall of Remembrance is never empty and visitors can see what a memorial looks like. Example memorials are not submissions from visitors, are not labelled individually, and do not correspond to real animals or real owners. Any resemblance to a real pet is coincidental.

Permanence, corrections and removal

Because the Wall of Remembrance is built as a set of static pages, a published memorial is meant to last, so please treat publication as lasting. If you need something corrected or removed, contact us and we'll help. Changes and removals take effect when the site is next rebuilt, which is usually within a day.

We can't control copies made by others. Search engines, browser and network caches, social networks, and web archives may keep or display a memorial after it has been removed from our site. If several people disagree about a memorial (for example, co-owners of the pet or family members), we may decline to change it, or remove it, at our discretion.

Prohibited content

Please don't submit content that:

  • Is sexually explicit or contains nudity
  • Contains graphic violence or gore unrelated to the natural, respectful depiction of a pet who has passed away, or celebrates cruelty to animals
  • Contains hate speech, hateful symbols, or harassment directed at any person or group
  • Endangers or exploits a minor, or shows identifiable children without a parent or guardian's consent
  • Includes other people's personal information, such as full names, addresses, phone numbers, or social media handles
  • Is spam, an advertisement, a link to a product or service, or unrelated to a pet memorial
  • Impersonates another person or organisation, or is false or intended to mislead
  • Contains malware, or is designed to disrupt or probe the site
  • Infringes someone else's copyright or other rights

Acceptable use

Please don't misuse the site. In particular, don't try to bypass our security or spam protection, submit content with automated tools, overload the site, scrape it in a way that disrupts it, or use it to harass anyone. We may block access, ignore submissions, or take other steps to protect the site and its visitors.

Copyright and takedown requests

If you believe content on the site infringes your copyright or other rights, send us a message through the contact page with the address of the page, a description of the work, your contact details, and a statement that you are the owner or authorised to act for them. We will review the request promptly and may remove the content. We may end a visitor's ability to submit if they repeatedly infringe the rights of others.

Not veterinary, medical, legal, or financial advice

Nothing on this site is veterinary, medical, legal, mental-health, or financial advice. Guides and directory descriptions are general information only. Always consult a licensed veterinarian about your pet's health, including end-of-life decisions. In an emergency, contact your local emergency veterinary service. If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, contact local emergency services or a crisis line immediately; this site is not a crisis service.

Intellectual property

The Pet Legacy Guide name, logo, design, and original guide text are ours. Directory descriptions are compiled from public information. Maps use data © OpenStreetMap contributors. Photographs in our guides are used under the open licences shown beneath each picture. Memorial content remains the property of the person who submitted it, subject to the license described above.

Third-party links and services

This site links to third-party websites, maps, and businesses we don't control, and relies on third-party services such as hosting, storage, spam protection, and automated screening. We aren't responsible for the content, accuracy, availability, or practices of those third parties. Visiting a linked site is at your own discretion and subject to its own terms.

Availability and changes to the site

Pet Legacy Guide is a free service run by a small team. We don't guarantee that it will always be available, error-free, or unchanged. We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of the site, including features, languages, and listings. If the project were ever to close, we would aim to post a notice on the site first.

Disclaimer and limitation of liability

Pet Legacy Guide is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for any loss arising from your use of the site, including reliance on directory information or guide content, or the loss of a submission. Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot be limited under applicable law, including your statutory consumer rights.

Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute arising from these terms or the site will be handled in the state or federal courts located in California, unless applicable consumer-protection law in your country gives you the right to a different forum or to rely on your local mandatory laws.

General

If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest remains in effect. Our failure to enforce a provision isn't a waiver of it. These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and Pet Legacy Guide about the site. Translations of these terms are provided for convenience, and the English version prevails in a conflict.
